The letter
How to write a cover letter that is not a restated resume
What goes wrong when a cover letter repeats the resume, and how Jobtiv builds a letter from your profile plus the posting you paste.
Most letters are the resume in paragraph form
A hiring manager who already has your resume does not need the same three jobs again, in full sentences, under "I am writing to apply". The failure is not tone. It is redundancy: a page that restates titles and dates and never answers the posting's actual ask — nights, precepting, a caseload, a system, a number.
The other failure is invention. A blank letter is an invitation to write "passionate about delivering high-quality care" because the posting used those words and you have nothing else on the page. That sentence is not evidence. It is a mirror.
The letter is built from the profile and the pasted ad
You paste the posting. The generator reads your existing work bullets, education, and skills — the same records Studio uses — and drafts a letter that points at those records instead of at adjectives. You edit the draft. The tool will not submit it.
If a requirement in the ad has no matching bullet in the profile, the honest output is a gap, not a sentence that pretends you ran a service you did not. That is slower than a template with "Dear Sir/Madam". It is also the only way the letter is not fiction.
What Kofi Bexleigh's letter can actually say
This is a fictional example CV, written to show the template. It is not a real person.
Kofi Bexleigh is a fictional staff nurse in Leeds. The letter for a ward post can point at a caseload of 6 on a 24-bed ward, a turning checklist after which pressure-ulcer incidents on the ward fell from 4 in a quarter to 1, and 3 students precepted through a medicines-assessment week.
It cannot say he ran the hospital. It cannot borrow a professional body's name as if the letter were approved. The fictional note on this page exists so nobody mistakes Kofi for a person who wrote in.
When a generated letter will not help
If the profile has no work, education, or projects, the letter has nothing to point at. The tool will not invent a placement. It is also not a visa letter, a reference, or a regulator statement. And a letter is not a substitute for the resume: they are meant to do different jobs.
Questions
- Should a cover letter repeat my resume?
- No. The resume is the record. The letter should point at the parts of that record the posting actually asked for, then stop.
- Does Jobtiv send the letter?
- No. You copy or download it and send it through whatever process the employer named.
- What if the posting is vague?
- A vague posting produces a thin letter. Decode the ad first if you need to see what is actually being asked.
