The story

What a STAR answer actually is

What goes wrong when a behavioral answer never reaches the result, and how Jobtiv splits a real episode from your profile into Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Most answers die in the situation

STAR is not a personality test. It is a filter hiring managers use so they can hear one episode all the way to a result. The usual failure is a six-minute situation: the building, the contractor, the weather, the client's mood — and then "so we delivered" with no number, no date, and no action that was yours rather than the team's.

The other failure is a result with no situation: "I reduced snagging" hanging in the air, so the listener cannot tell whether you ran a £4m fit-out or closed a cupboard door. Without the four parts in order, neither version can be checked.

One episode, four labelled parts, from work you already logged

You pick a real episode — often a bullet already on the profile — and the builder splits it into Situation, Task, Action, Result. The action has to be yours. The result has to be observable (a date, a count, a snag list that shrank). Optional AI polish rearranges what you typed. It will not remember the night for you.

This is not the likely-interview-questions product, and it is not a mock interview. It is a writing tool for one story. You still say it out loud somewhere else.

  1. Situation: where and when, in one or two sentences.
  2. Task: what you were on the hook for, not the company's mission.
  3. Action: what you did, in verbs a listener can picture.
  4. Result: a number, a date, or a before-and-after someone else could have seen.

What Aoife Boateng-Merrick is splitting

This is a fictional example CV, written to show the template. It is not a real person.

Aoife Boateng-Merrick, Project Manager, Belfast. Fictional. Used here as Aoife.

Aoife Boateng-Merrick is a fictional project manager in Belfast on commercial fit-out. A STAR answer about handover is not "I am a strong leader". It is the programme, the contractors, and the snag list at handover — situation on a live site, task as the person who owned the date, action as the sequence she ran, result as the list that actually closed.

If the profile never logged the snag list, the Result box will be empty. That emptiness is information. Filling it with "stakeholders were delighted" is how STAR becomes a slogan.

When STAR will not help

If you cannot remember the episode, a template will not recover it. The builder will not sit in the interview with you. It will not generate a bank of likely questions. And a polished paragraph is not the same as a spoken answer under time.

Questions

What does STAR stand for?
Situation, Task, Action, Result. Four parts, in that order, for one real episode — not a biography.
Can I use a team result as mine?
The Action has to be what you did. A team number can sit in Result if you say it is the team's, and your action is specific.
Is this a mock interview?
No. It is a writer for one story. Spoken practice is a different tool, and Interview Coach is not on this site yet.
